The inspiration for this puzzle came from looking in the mirror. I have a gap wide enough to stick a screwdriver through. Initially, I laid this out as a Sunday 21x, wanting to have all the gaps exactly in the middle of the puzzle. That's a … gap in one's teeth? Fun twist on the old "words hidden within theme phrases" theme type. It does run the risk of the solver finishing the grid without understanding the theme, and putting the puzzle aside.

It's just that having to work to reveal technical terms I don't know and don't care that much about see esp. Everything else seems just fine. Easy enough to hack away at the Downs from there and thus take care of the NW. Getting that answer quickly significantly altered the difficulty level of the puzzle. That also happens to be the Ugliest part of the grid, or ugly-adjacent at any rate. Thought the black mts were in NDAK. Wasn't even sure I knew what a "sports ticker" was. Some of the trickier fill was almost certainly a result of having essentially six full rows of theme-related entries, with most down entries crossing one or more of those rows — wow at those constraints. I said it was okay I was a shiksha anyway. There was a lot to like in this puzzle, but also a few rough spots, as others have noted. Puzzle has 7 fill-in-the-blank clues and 2 cross-reference clues. Undoubtedly, there may be other solutions for Twist of a screwdriver? They might sigh. I caught the crossword bug about three years ago and fell deep into the rabbit hole of crossword construction, reading everything I could get my hands on.
