Also made a minor update to the Russian Checkers review. I was keeping my impressions in a little text file, mainly as a reminder of what to focus on in future blog posts, but have decided to put them up here in case they might help anyone looking for something to play but perhaps lacking the time to try everything until they find a hit. What really bugs me is the promotion rule, which needlessly punishes early promotions and leads to the awkward rule forcing Pawns to remain in suspended animation if no captured pieces are available. Honestly I would probably score this game higher, except that in its wake this promotion rule appears to have become more popular, which is a problem for me. The linear movement aspect feels out of place in a Draughts game, and the kings are a bit too strong for my taste. I can, however, see why people like this game, so I give it a good score on that basis; certainly opening play will be varied, and the draw rate is low.

It is known in the west as Turkish Draughts or Turkish Checkers. It is very popular and there are clubs in Turkey and Germany organizing tournaments. Complicated endgame problems have been published in books, some of them dating from the 19th century. The left down square field should be dark. Players start with 16 men that are lined up on each side, in two rows, skipping the furthest back. Men can move forward or sideways one square, capturing by means of a jump. When a man reaches the back row, he is promoted to a dama "Lady" at the end of the move. Dama may move any number of squares forwards or sideways, capturing by jumping over any piece and landing in any square within permissible path beyond said piece. Pieces are removed immediately upon capture. If a capture is possible, it must be done. If several ways of capturing are possible, the one that captures the most pieces must be chosen. No difference between dama and man is made in capture, they count as one piece each. If there is more than one way to capture the maximally possible number of pieces, then the player may choose which to take. Unlike other checkers variants, since enemy pieces are removed immediately upon capture; as pieces are captured and removed from the board, it is possible to cross the same square previously occupied by a captured piece more than once empty the 2nd time and afterwards in the same capturing sequence. After each capture the piece is removed from the board before jumping is continued; its removal may open up additional captures previously impossible.

I learned this game in my youth, like many people, but only truly learned to appreciate it in my old age. Thankfully, now people seem to be playing on order-7 boards more often, which is a significant improvement. It seems that might be last on the list, so I might just wait for the official release. Anyway, Stigmergy is a good game, substantially easier to play OTB than Tumbleweed, but also feels a bit more sterile. Hex — The game which looms so large in the world of modern abstract games that any connection game is inevitably compared to it. The addition of toggle-capture adds some much-needed interactivity to the game that I find enjoyable. The result is very hectic, with spectacular combos appearing frequently, and often in surprising ways. A treasured part of my gaming collection — a Go board made from Japanese Kaya, with the lines drawn via a sword dipped in black laquer yes, really. Check out the other post for more. American Pool Checkers — A game criminally underrated in its home country, American Pool Checkers is a close relative of Russian Checkers, where men no longer promote in mid-move. The game creates a feeling of constant tension that builds until the endgame, where precise calculation is required to squeeze out the last few points, or to force your opponent into bad placements. The result is an appealing, varied game of interesting tactics. There are some additional wrinkles to the majority capturing rule, which take some getting used to. A classic by any measure, Havannah is easy to understand yet blessed with bottomless depth. Unread post by Caldor » Fri Dec 17, am. Like most of my ideas it had no impact at all, but I still think it has potential. I usually have the setting set to letting the display decide the refresh rate, so if its already running NTSC then that should be correct. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post. Catchup — Easily the best game made by Nick Bentley, which regularly gets criticised by the BGG abstracts community, and Nick himself, because of the need to keep score. You never can be sure about it because something may emerge out of thin air. Admittedly the average Croda game will be much longer than a typical Dameo game, but all other things being equal I usually prefer longer games to shorter ones. Capture occurs exactly as in Pente, but capture is not an alternate win condition as in that game. October 23, at am. Sygo however does have a distinct personality, and the Symple protocol is a slice of genius.
You have hit the mark. In it something is also to me it seems it is good idea. I agree with you.
