In Totem chapter it is written that totems hits are counted as player's ones. Totems do have their own defensive stats so they can hold endurance charges. Elemental overload is different, it triggers when you use a skill, roll a crit on use and then hit something with it the crit also must be confirmed for attack skills. You do use a totem skill, probably roll a crit too but it doesn't matter because summoning a totem doesn't hit anything. A similar example is Mastermind of Discord, when you summon a Flame Totem your skills will gain cold penetration because the passive states you just need to use [fire] skill.
