Some of the best things come in threes, and that's certainly true with Legendary Pokemon. They comprise some of the strongest Pokemon in the game, and most of them come in threes thanks to the incredible lore surrounding them. But what does that mean for competitive battling? Certainly, some of these trios will just be made up of Pokemon banned from competitive battling for being too powerful. Still, some are better than others. This list will look at the trios recognized either officially by Pokemon or the general Pokemon community, and stack them against each other to find out which triangle stands the tallest. Even though they are all a vital part of the series, there's no denying that some outrank others. Every fan has their favorite trio, but only one can be the best of them all. Landorus stops the conflict, and the thankful citizens from Unova build a shrine in his honor. The genies have an alternate form known as Therian. Under this form, they look more animalistic, but their design remains unappealing. As such, these genies are one of the reasons why Gen V gets such a bad rep. As such, they can sometimes get lost among the region's overwhelming lore. Uxie stands for knowledge, Mezprit for emotion, and Azelf for willpower. Thanks to their frail and pastel-colored designs, the Lake Guardians are memorable enough. However, they play no prominent role in the Generation IV games and usually get confined to their respective lakes. Furthermore, they don't particularly excel in battle, and most players catch them only to complete their regional dex. In theory, Xerneas and Yvelthal are intriguing. The idea of creation and destruction is a compelling one, and their designs certainly do them justice. However, the execution was a tad underwhelming. The Aura Trio feels incomplete in Generation VI, instantly putting it at a disadvantage compared to other trios.

In particular, this term was used at one point referring to Primal Groudon and Lunala together, in the context of their use in Double Battles:. Some terms have been used by fans but are not known to be officially used: " Legendary group ", " Legendary leader ", " Legendary quartet ", and " Legendary quintet ". In the games , Legendary duos are often found after the player enters the Hall of Fame but they usually are not as important to the main storyline as the trios are. Duos or their component parts are featured in several of the movies as keepers of peace. However, even within trios, the dynamic between two of the members is often very close to that of a duo: Kyogre and Groudon , Dialga and Palkia , Reshiram and Zekrom , Xerneas and Yveltal , and Solgaleo and Lunala are all examples of this. Legendary trios can be subdivided into two tiers: normal trios and Special trios.

Once dominating early Pokemon's competitive meta, the beasts have been overtaken by other more versatile Legendaries, as their singular typing and relatively shallow movepools make them comparatively one-note. Certainly, some of these trios will just be made up of Pokemon banned from competitive battling for being too powerful. As such, they can sometimes get lost among the region's overwhelming lore. The first three Regis are practically the weakest of the Regi bunch, when looking at both raw power and competitive viability. Reshiram and Zekrom were once a singular being that divided because of a war between two brothers. Swords of Justice. Still, while Regice has been largely unviable, the other two have their niches and work well in their respective competitive tiers. These days, they're not strong enough to be banned from regular competition, but they are strong enough to dominate there. Either of the two Legendary horses can hold their own, with lumbering slugger Glastrier making waves as a tank, and speedy glass cannon Spectrier even getting banned from regular competitive play. They have the stats to back it up, with Tornadus and Thundurus rocking a base stat total and Landorus sitting pretty at While there is a clear dynamic in place between Lunala and Solgaleo, Necrozma comes in as a third entity.
