Ruth is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Centre for Brain Research at the University of Auckland. Research Interests: The focus of Ruth's research lies in the identification of early indicators of neurodegenerative conditions within human cell culture systems. Of particular interest to Ruth is Parkinson's disease, a complex neurodegenerative disorder. Their objective is to employ innovative cell culture systems to pinpoint and understand the initial pathogenic mechanisms that initiate the progression of neurodegenerative conditions. Given that individuals with Parkinson's often experience impaired olfactory function years before the onset of motor symptoms, Ruth regards the olfactory system as a promising therapeutic target to potentially impede the spread of pathology. In the long term, Ruth envisions the utilization of a human olfactory cell model to establish a nationwide screening platform for the early detection of Parkinson's disease. This platform could facilitate the identification of individuals displaying initial signs of the disease, enabling timely interventions aimed at preventing the onset of more severe symptoms and slowing the progression of the condition. Postdoctoral Fellowship: Ruth is pioneering the development of a human olfactory cell model specific to Parkinson's disease. They source cells from the nasal cavities of individuals living with Parkinson's and cultivate them in the laboratory to create olfactory neurons that closely resemble those connecting the nose to the brain. By closely examining these olfactory neurons, Ruth aims to uncover the earliest changes that occur in Parkinson's disease, which could hold the key to therapeutic strategies for halting disease progression. Postdoctoral Research: Ruth is also engaged in a collaborative Parkinson's drug discovery project that employs an in vitro human cell model. Their work involved establishing a pioneering human cell reprogramming model for Huntington's disease. Using this model, they identified neuropathological mechanisms associated with striatal neuron degeneration in Huntington's disease. A significant discovery from their doctoral research was the observation of impaired neuronal maturation in Huntington's neurons compared to neurons from unaffected family members.

Hachette Books , The Words We Live By takes an entertaining and informative look at America's most important historical document, now with discussions on new rulings on hot button issues such as immigration, gay marriage, gun control, and affirmative action. In The Words We Live By , Linda Monk probes the idea that the Constitution may seem to offer cut-and-dried answers to questions regarding personal rights, but the interpretations of this hallowed document are nearly infinite. For example, in the debate over gun control, does "the right of the people to bear arms" as stated in the Second Amendment pertain to individual citizens or regulated militias? What do scholars say? Should the Internet be regulated and censored, or does this impinge on the freedom of speech as defined in the First Amendment? These and other issues vary depending on the interpretation of the Constitution.
