The anniversary of this important Philadelphia Campaign attack should be an especially interesting and action-filled event. At this event, guests can tour the Whitall House. Constructed in for James and Ann Whitall, this house was designed in the Georgian style and became the centerpiece of their acre plantation on the banks of the Delaware River. Following the battle, the house was used as a hospital. Acquired by the county in , the house and grounds are interpreted as Red Bank Battlefield Park and are open to the public on a daily basis for recreation. The Memorial service for the 14 Continental Soldiers killed as a result of the Battle of Red bank will start at 1 PM and include the following highlights :. Honored during the ceremony will be recognition of the Hessian Soldiers who gave their lives that day. A speaker will overview the recent archaeological dig at the North end of the park, unveiling bone fragments from over 17 Hessians. Specific identification of the fragments is still being conducted. On that October day in , Ewald had lost five of his closest friends, including a family member, and four more of his friends were seriously wounded in their assault on American forces at Fort Mercer. Last summer the Park recovered the remains of at least 15 individuals believed to be Hessian soldiers, or troops from German states hired by the British Empire to support its forces. The remains include skull and leg bone fragments that show these individuals may have suffered multiple wounds or dismemberment. Musket balls, canister shot, and grape shot were all found nearby. Yet, it was only a partial victory, as American forces still held the Delaware River and countryside, which Howe needed to resupply and reinforce his troops in the city. On October 22, , approximately 1, Hessians descended upon a small American force of just over soldiers. The Hessian soldiers tore their way through abatis and this brutal field of fire, but never reached the fort.
