His defeat at Shiganshina cemented this, where the sacrifices he made all proved to be in vain. The intense mental strain of this caused him to develop Dissociative Identity Disorder, where one part of him was a Marleyan Warrior, and the other was a soldier staunchly devoted to Paradis and its cause. In the early stages of Attack on Titan's story, Reiner was never given as much importance as the main trio.

As he tries to wake Galliard, Reiner unknowingly transfers to him the memory of Marcel admitting his role in getting Reiner selected as the Armored Titan. He is proven wrong, as Sasha is able to successfully locate the boar, but upon seeing the size of it, insists that they leave it be. Reiner is interrupted when Eren suddenly pulls the group into Paths to speak with them. Eren then starts squeezing harder until Reiner's armor begins to shatter once more, trying to tear him out of his Titan form. They would never get a chance, as Sasha Blouse alerted the group to an oncoming horde of Titans. Shortly after, Annie appears and Reiner orders her to remove Marco's maneuvering equipment. After the attack, Reiner and his allies enter a refugee camp inside Wall Rose. On the morning of the Liberio festival Reiner, Pieck, and Galliard watch over the Warrior candidates, and Reiner is reluctantly forced to pay for his allies as they enjoy the festival. When the plan fails and the Yeagerists are alerted to their presence, the group takes the Azumabito to the basement of the building they are being held in, allowing Reiner and Annie to transform and attack the Yeagerists without risk of collateral damage. Reiner then tries to take Eren by force, but he is suddenly attacked by Mikasa. The flying boat reaches Eren on the outskirts of Fort Salta and immediately comes under fire from the Beast Titan. This prompted Annie to attack him for his cowardice. During hand-to-hand combat training, Eren admits to Reiner that he finds it unnecessary, claiming that it would be much wiser to run away when attacked by another human than to engage them. He informs the Marley officers on facts to consider when deciding the logistics of the attack, but is criticized for not creating a plan.
