In the mids a developer planned to demolish it and plans were drawn up to create offices and flats and even a spa in its place, despite the efforts of a local entrepreneur who hoped to restore it but was unable to raise funds. It looked likely that the Rex would become a residential development. Despite being discussed in the House of Commons the Rex was declined government subsidy.

Films were shown Sunday to Wednesday, and Thursday-Sunday the building was given over to the more commercially lucrative pastime of bingo , like so many cinemas in this period.
