Riverdance is a theatrical show that consists mainly of traditional Irish music and dance. Shortly afterwards, husband and wife production team John McColgan and Moya Doherty expanded it into a stage show, which opened in Dublin on 9 February As of , the show continues to tour the world. Riverdance is rooted in a three-part suite of baroque-influenced traditional music called Timedance. Timedance was composed, recorded and performed for the Eurovision Song Contest , which was hosted by Ireland. The piece was performed, with accompanying dancers from Dublin City Ballet, [2] during the interval of the contest, and later released as a Planxty single. Whelan had also produced EastWind , a album by Planxty member Andy Irvine with Davy Spillane , which fused Irish and Balkan folk music and influenced the genesis of " Riverdance ". Riverdance was first performed during the seven-minute interval of the Eurovision Song Contest at the Point Theatre in Dublin on 30 April The performance was transmitted to an estimated million viewers worldwide [5] [6] and earned a standing ovation. The video of the show topped the Irish and UK charts in The show moved to London in June , where it had a sell-out four-week run at The Apollo. The show returned to the Point Theatre in July for a sell-out six-week run. The show's growing success coincided with lead dancer Michael Flatley clashing with the producers over salary and royalty fees. As a result, Dunne paired up with Eileen Martin for the opening night. Our ancestors knew fear and joy and fire, worked wood and stone and water to make a place they could call home. The first peoples knew the world as a place of power, their songs and dances and stories are negotiations with elemental powers. The first half of this performance shows them coming to terms with the world and with themselves. The sun brings life and light and fire, the opening dance sequence celebrates this benevolent masculine power. There is also that other primeval mystery, the salmon swimming upstream, the blind urgings of nature, heart yearning to heart. We need and sustain each other; we keep this knowledge in song since the beginning of time. Sensual, nurturing, independent and fierce, the power of women as they celebrate themselves, as they challenge men in a dance of empowerment. The brute power of elemental forces, beyond human control, beyond human understanding.
