The designs begin with a pencil sketch followed by the digitally crafted form. Emma Baldwin's ceramic vessels merge functionality and sculpture, creating a minimalist Japanese inspired aesthetic. She uses both contemporary and historic references, combining hand thrown and wheel spun building techniques. Glazing each piece with designs that accentuate their elegant shapes, Emma experiments with the chemical reactions of overlapping glazes in the kiln. In her debut collection at Sarah Wiseman Gallery, we see slender necked vases with nods to traditional Cobalt Blue, interiors of turquoise and oxides in the kiln that bubble into gas forming earthy textures. Sarah Wiseman has enjoyed exhibiting British and International Contemporary Paintings in Oxford for more than nine years. We also proudly represent mid-career and emerging artists working in Glass, Ceramics and Jewellery. We are the largest commercial gallery in Oxford of original contemporary art, and we host six formal exhibitions a year, working with both emerging and established contemporary artists. We are always on the look out for something new and exciting and we hope you will come in and discover what we have in store for you. This Summer we bring you a fascintating exhibition built out of originality, playfulness and exploration of materials. The existence of natural circles in our universe establishes them as an instinctive shape to work with; each of the exhibiting artists uses them to constrain and give form to their work. The exploration of materials is central to the exhibition; bringing structure and order to their chosen media, each artist's work is an absolute labour of love. Through the use of texture, colour, movement and light, common discords of order and chaos, man made and natural, individual and multiple, depth and scale are addressed. Many intricate details give each piece an added dimension, allowing the work to be viewed in its entirety or as individual elements. See more on our Exhibitions page.
