The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth is nearly here , and we have some fantastic new cards to work with for casual and competitive Commander decks alike. On top of the cards just being cool, they're also, you know, from The Lord of the Rings. I love this. I'm so excited about this series of cards that I'll be providing a few different Legendary Creatures a look over the next few weeks, creating my own take on brewing them for competitive and casual Commander play. Some of those will probably be pretty low power, and some, like this week, will still be pretty powerful. Today's focus is Sauron, the Dark Lord. Yes, the big bad himself! What attracted me to this Commander? Let's get into it. Why Sauron? Simply put — he's pretty awesome and powerful. His Ward ability makes it difficult for opponents to remove.

Mana Values. You may reveal a noncreature, nonland card from among them and put it into your hand.

The Necromancer. The Lidless Eye. The Lord of the Rings. These are some of the myriad titles held by Sauron, the Dark Lord. This dark power looms over Middle-earth throughout the entirety of The Lord of the Rings saga, pulling the strings of kings and hobbits alike like a sinister puppeteer. Although Magic: The Gathering has always found inspiration in The Lord of the Rings, it wasn't until the much anticipated The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Universes Beyond set that any of the characters made it into the game. And Sauron came with all the might of the Hosts of Mordor.

Interestingly enough, I think the Orc Archer will be especially good in this deck as it helps remove pesky blockers for our Orc army.

Commander 1 Sauron, the Dark Lord 0. Mirkwood Bats. Rent from Cardhoarder. Exotic Orchard. Considering how well he protects himself from removal, you shouldn't need to worry about much other card draw. That's a threat you can use to impact the board or even end the game quickly. Bastion of Remembrance. Mana is slightly harder to come by in Commander when you're trying to keep to a budget while also maintaining a reasonable power level, so our options here are limited — I kept myself to a simple and budget-friendly mana base while also not playing rocks more expensive than Signets. Sauron the Amasser. All four of these abilities are good by themselves, but together they synergize beautifully to keep Sauron on the field, your Army growing, and your hand fresh. When you do, cast it for its madness cost or put it into your graveyard. If that creature is legendary, its controller loses 3 life.
