Old-fashioned ones still exist, and the best of that breed are among my favourites. Here are a few of my top picks, well suited to the current era, to consider for this summer. All are bookable at sawdays. Wake when you want — Kathryn leaves a continental breakfast with local Penrith delights. Sleep well in rooms full of original art and designer furniture — some have views over the Cambrian mountains; others look over the garden and big veg patch. The restoration has been a labour of love: modernism and art deco design in full flow down to the period fittings and tea mugs. House tours include the open roof deck; you can lunch alfresco in the wildflower garden; Wells-next-the-Sea and Blakeney are within easy reach. Lucy, the owner, bakes cakes daily and her breakfasts are a treat.
