I left university with a degree in fine art. Wild at Heart, a florist in Westbourne Grove, had just opened around the corner from the antiques shop my mother worked in. Decked out in my dungarees, hippy beads and DMs, I went in and asked the owner, Nikki Tibbles, for a job. She threw me over a money pouch; I ended up staying 14 years. She was joined by her younger sister Charl, who had recently graduated from Sussex University, and the pair spent over a dozen wonderful years there. Both over six feet tall, the girls worked like Amazons in all weathers, putting out flowers every morning, and soon became a familiar sight to passers-by. We had to make hundreds of bouquets and a gust of wind could blow the whole stand over. One of those passers-by on his daily bus ride to work was an advertising director named Simon Brotherson. He orchestrated a meeting with Vic, which eventually led to their getting married. The thought of owning her own flower shop had been with her for some time. One day, when walking Betsy to school, she came across a suitable location and, with a little financial help from Simon, she decided to go ahead.
