Formerly sold under the SE brand, these Andy Munro—designed Egg speakers have been given a major update. Andy Munro is well known for his commercial studio designs, and also his previous involvement with Dynaudio loudspeakers. As with the original Eggs, the cabinet is a ported, egg—shaped, 14—litre moulding. The shape provides both mechanical rigidity and a significant reduction in diffraction, as there are no sharp cabinet edges. The curved surfaces also break up internal reflections and suppress standing waves, so despite the technical challenges in manufacturing this type of cabinet, there are many potential benefits.

I've purchased a pair of the sE Munro's 'Egg' monitors and I'm very happy with their performance. The noise is very low in loudness level. But it's constantly hearable if you are 30cm away from the speakers. This monitor system is my first one. Is this type of 'noise' normal for active speakers? I guess not I tried a lot of solutions I think, maybe the active cable connections between the speakers and the amp are the source of the noise problem. I was looking at those. The company discussed sending me some a year back, I hoped to do a little field test on them, thus, pass on a bit more info for us here. Never heard back from them so I moved on They look pretty cool. My active monitors are very quiet.

Although it's true to say that small and incremental advances are still being made, fundamental loudspeaker science has barely changed in well over 50 years. The differences between the countless monitor speakers basically come down to slightly different design compromises and priorities, with the end users choosing one model over another largely on the basis of personal preference rather than technical achievement.

Amplifier technology is mature, and even low-cost systems can deliver extremely good quality. Loudspeaker drive units, too, have reached something of a quality plateau: yes, a bigger budget buys a fractionally more capable driver, but even budget units perform acceptably. However, the most influential aspect of a loudspeaker design is, arguably, the cabinet: the big wooden box that holds everything together.

The sound is very noisy on these.. In defence of the Eggs I do have to say that speakers like these can be their own biggest enemies, in a way, as the clean, pure and precise sound they can produce allows you not only to hear the music with great clarity, but also any shortcomings or additions by the speakers themselves. It all started with the Hypex AS2. Alternatives I've not come across any other egg-shaped speakers, although the current Genelec range does go quite some way in a similar direction. Clearly, the drive units are quite efficient and the power amps are conservatively rated, but even the heaviest rocker won't find anything to complain about in terms of volume here! Pros Distinctive styling with very practical and audible benefits. These establish the overall shape, control any shell resonances, and give it remarkable strength for relatively little weight. The internal bracing ribs help to control cabinet resonances, while adding to the speaker's strength without significantly increasing its weight. What does your system sound like with headphones? Although it's true to say that small and incremental advances are still being made, fundamental loudspeaker science has barely changed in well over 50 years. The bass is fast and tight, revealing the true character of any kick-drum EQ, as well as the timing relationship between the bass and kick. Overall, the Egg monitors delivered far more than I was expecting. On a more serious note, a sphere has only one dimension and thus has a very strong resonant frequency.

Though the amplifiers may seem modestly powered when compared with other active monitors, they pack plenty of punch, with their 35V power rails providing adequate headroom and allowing a maximum SPL, per pair of speakers and at one metre, of dB. In a studio, it's usual to have a rule that mobile phones must be turned fully off not just to silent for exactly the reason that they can cause breakthrough into the audio. The buzz is stronger in the left than the right. For sure, bad recordings sound exactly as bad as they were mastered ; Btw: These are the frist speakers where I can clearly hear a difference between 96khz sampling rate and khz sampling rate. All in all, these active studio monitors are surprisingly lounge friendly, sound wise. What does your system sound like with headphones? If the concept of spherical and egg-shaped loudspeaker cabinets has been around for 40 years or more, why has no-one done anything about it until now? Thankfully, SE have recognised this and provided an off switch on the main amplifier unit, so that once the system has been installed the lights can be extinguished. There's some small-print, of course, and the full terms and conditions are on the company's web site, but it is a genuine and credible warranty. Unlike most monitors swamping the nearfield market, the EGG system utilises a passive unpowered monitor design. I have to add that I used them in a room of approximately 5 by 5 meter, and they coped fine with that. In a distance of 1 to 1. Front porting helps with this.
