While the new season has been acclaimed, many viewers criticised the season for being too short. However, unbeknownst to them, this is merely the first volume of a two-part season. It has since been pointed out by other fans that the concluding five episodes will be released on 27 July. In October , it was announced that Cavill would be leaving the fantasy adaptation after season three. However, his return was cut short when it was revealed that new DC co-boss James Gunn had decided to drop him from the franchise. Fans of The Witcher have been expressing their sadness over his impending departure from the series. He will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth in season four. Making a fantasy series is hard. It might look easy, after the floodgates were opened by The Lord of the Rings , and then Game of Thrones became a cultural phenomenon, but it's very difficult. Fantasy stories are inherently silly, with dragons and magic and characters called L'othiralica Glordinthinga, yet often try to be dark and self-serious tales of sex and violence, loaded with political intrigue. Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher , despite a strong enough first season, has struggled in the face of these difficulties, and fans seem pretty clear on why. The man seemed a dream casting as Geralt, not only for his movie star pedigree and impressive physique, but because he was a fan. He loves The Witcher, every inch of every page and every pixel of every video game, and fans have taken his impending exit as a sign that things will only get worse from here.

The results have always been messy, but also compelling, as the heart of Witcher stories has always been outcasts finding one another and forming a reluctant family. Yet The Witcher has always felt like its writers have never had enough episodes to tell these stories. This has resulted in prior seasons having convoluted plots, as the show juggled timelines, nations, and prophecies in an effort to do justice to both a fantasy epic and a renowned collection of short stories in one TV series. These warring impulses are now, in the third season, painfully obvious on screen, as big character beats are quickly ironed over in favor of moving the plot along. The Witcher has become a show that demands close reading, but threatens to insult the intelligence of anyone patient enough to do so. Granted, Yen was being played — she did not know that it was Ciri that she would be sacrificing to Voleth Meir. But she still agreed to give a child to the fucking Baba Yaga , and still very nearly handed Ciri over! This is provisional, of course; only the first five episodes of the long-awaited third season premiere this week, with a second batch of three episodes due in exactly one month. And setup is all there is to take in here. Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri shuttle from place to place, getting over their difficult grudges in the space of a montage so that they can get wrapped up in the business of politics, hoping that a more stable Continent results in a Continent with fewer people who want Ciri and her world-breaking power for their own devices.

You can't ignore the jerking around of various timelines and plot threads in disjointed fashion as though the series was trying to rush towards the big events of the later books and completely skipping over the quieter scenes of Geralt just being a Witcher that everyone wanted to see because it crash lands into a field of pure show original garbage that no one asked for. Instead, they included some unnecessary annoying characters, unneeded scenes, and huge plot gaps. It's almost like they thought we wouldn't notice the drop in quality, or the focus on unimportant side characters to the detriment of the main character. It's just a generic story. Some characters that don't say ten words in the books are main POV characters now. Gets more and more tedious. Fire these incompetents and start over in a year or two. Netflix and Lauren Schmidt have constructed a noose for their own necks by flicking between the books and their own disastrous "creative" ideas. In fact, beyond terrible. Feel bad for Mister Cavill, especially after him saying this is his dream role, sorry mate, the fans stand with you! It was this love of the series that brought in Cavill, who championed the series as its face and title character. Overall, the only good thing about this TV show was Cavill and his representation of a witcher.
