Things are really starting to hit the fan in the latest episode of the Apple TV Plus series Severance. In fact, it appears that the hold Lumon has had on the company's Innnies for years is finally fraying to the point of breaking and at least in part, that control is slipping for reasons it usually does. Lumon decided its hold on those who went through the Severance procedure was far stronger and more dependable then it actually was. It forgot that while the Innies are oddities, they are indeed people who have thoughts and emotions and desires. When the firm allowed the Innies to experience a world that was outside their little office space, they realized that was just part of a bigger world. Once that larger world was pointed out, especially when it came to Dylan seeing that he has a house and a family, things started to unravel quickly. There was also the fact that Irving found something to live for besides finger cuffs and MDEs.

Editor's note: The below article contains spoilers for Episode 7 of Severance. The show centers on a group of employees who agree to allow the company they work for, Lumon, to sever their memories so that they are able to separate their work and personal life. However, everyone is on edge and for once Helly seems the most well-adjusted person in the room. Over the course of six episodes, the series has done a solid job of building the characters and singular motivations of Irving John Turturro , Helly Britt Lower , and Dylan Zack Cherry. With the overtime contingency though, we can better understand why the company is able to have such a tight grip on its employees at all times. One could theorize that Mark may have signed up for an experiment to see the limits of the severance procedure and in doing so, agreed to allow the company to tinker with his memory to make him think his wife had been killed in a car accident. This would also explain why Casey is now called Gemma and is now serving as a wellness counselor for Lumon. The show has often seemed like a machination of screenwriter-director Charlie Kaufman , and this latest twist borrows directly from the plot of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The next episode is all set to take the team back to the control room, where they will try to Macgyver their way into awareness outside of Lumon using the overtime contingency setting. What we don't know is whether this fight against Lumon will be as personal for everyone else as it is for Mark, and if the others are all a victim of the kind of reality-shattering illusions that he and his wife have turned out to be. Severance has always been as much about freedom and solidarity as it has been about the corporate powers that be abusing their control over their subjects — but with a resistance in force, we have a better idea of how the rest of the season will pan out and where a potential Season 2 could go.

The meeting spirals out of control and Mark leaves in a hurry, with an upgraded Lumon key card in his pocket. The next morning, Harmony helps Devon with her breastfeeding issues, then sticks around to chat over tea. This episode is the set up for the finale, which takes place over episodes 8 and 9. As such, the pace and the reveals pick up even more. The season is also paced, both in action and reveals, like a dam slowly losing its structural integrity, until it bursts and the reservoir behind it inundates the city below. Many shows attempt this and save too much for the last minute. Severance is a master class in avalanche pacing, where a rolling snowball gradually turns into a glacier sliding down a mountainside: giving us more information each episode, but not overwhelming viewers with too many details and red herrings or rambling off into pointless side plots; repeating and emphasizing important points just enough so that we understand what to watch out for, but not beating us over the head with them; while also developing unique, memorable characters and settings.

And then that framing was weird and awkward. But the severed floor is built for babies. For instance, Hindle designed the computers used by the MDR team as a tube-based touch screen, connected to trackballs that would mystify most millennials. The way the office is laid out also adheres to this idea of creating a space that is vast and sleek, yet simultaneously constrained and awkward. But the show largely restrains itself… until Episode 7. Milchick changes the lighting pattern so that over the course of the song the office transforms into almost a foreboding club atmosphere: awash in strong red and purple lights that flash and almost strobe along with the music.

Severance episode 7

First released on February 18th, , Severance has garnered immediate universal acclaim thanks to the decidedly dystopian themes it tackles. In particular, creator Dan Erickson's Severance acts as a warning against the perils of corporate drudgery and how employees are often shorn of their identity when faced with authoritarian, punitive measures in the modern workplace. Severance 's twist-filled seventh episode , "Defiant Jazz," paints the sinister Lumon in an even bleaker light following the episode's shocking coda.
