The Three Stooges boast a legacy as shemp 3 stooges of the most influential comedy acts ever, but the changes to their lineup breed some confusion. Over the years, the trio put out hundreds of comedy shorts in which they occupy a variety of jobs, before causing the situation to descend into chaos with their trademark slapstick violence. Samuel Horwitz, known professionally as Shemp Howard, was an American actor and comedian. He is best known for his role as the third stooge in the Three Stooges, a role he first portrayed at the beginning of the act — while the act was still known as "Ted Healy and his Stooges", and again from until his death in Between his times with the Stooges, Shemp had a successful film career as a solo comedian. Shemp's brother, Moe Howard, started in showbusiness as a youngster, on stage and in films. By , Moe had teamed up with boyhood-friend-turned-vaudeville star Ted Healy in a "roughhouse" act. One day Moe spotted his brother Shemp in the audience, and yelled at him from the stage. Quick-witted Shemp yelled right back, and walked onto the stage. From then on he was part of the act, usually known as "Ted Healy and His Stooges". Healy's original stooges were the Howard brothers, with Larry Fine joining in March Moe, Larry and Shemp continued until July , when Ted Healy approached them to team up again for the Shuberts' Broadway revue "Passing Show of ," and they readily accepted the offer. In spite of any differences, an association with the nationally-known Ted Healy provided opportunities the three comics were not achieving on their own. He was the older brother of both Moe Howard and Jerome "Curly" Howard as well as the "third stooge" in the early years of the act. He would rejoin the trio in May after Curly suffered a serious stroke, at the cost of what had been a successful solo career up until then. Shemp was the tallest of all the stooges, at 5'6", and dying at the age of 60, he is also the second shortest living stooge after his younger brother Curly who died at the age of 48, making them the only stooges who did not live up to the age of Shemp, like his brothers Moe and Curly, was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn.
