The Port went to a month-to-month lease with Gatens in March and had been trying unsuccessfully to meet with him to discuss ending it. Throughout a monthly board meeting attended by at least 40 community members, Port commissioners and Cuellar said they are trying to cut expenses and make a little more money so it can eventually help pay to dredge sand-filled Alsea Bay. But the board was not willing to compromise with another Waldport resident upset with 1-year-old rules that keeps recreational crabbers on their own platform in the new marina and away from boats using slips and docking platforms. Before the marina was rebuilt in , there were constant conflicts between crabbers and boaters on shared platforms. The new rules have crabbers on a handicapped-accessible platform and a long foot wide crabbing deck at the east end of the marina.

Mike Gatens, owner of the Shrimp Daddy bait and tackle shop, speaks with the board of directors for the Port of Alsea regarding a building he is leasing. Dozens of people packed into the meeting at the Waldport Community Center to watch the proceedings and give comments later in the meeting. Photos by Mathew Brock. The Port of Alsea Board of Commissioners decided to evict Shrimp Daddy from the port-owned red building following its meeting regular Wednesday. Owner Mike Gatens will have until March 31, , to vacate, after which the port will move in. The most contentious topic of the night was the fate of a lease the port has with Shrimp Daddy owner Mike Gatens, under which he has rented half the red building next to the port for the last two years. According to the board, the port was previously looking to demolish that building to increase parking near the docks, but things changed when the port purchased the Dock of the Bay and began operating it as a marina after the previous owner died. Some members of the board said they were disappointed that Gatens never sat down to speak with them about the lease outside of a public meeting despite their requests to do so. Gatens was unable to attend that meeting while out of town on duty as a firefighter in Nevada. The accusations of drug use were especially contentious, prompting Gatens to ask his employees to take voluntary drug tests, which he says turned up completely negative. Gatens denied being previously contacted by the port to discuss his lease and the alleged issues caused by his employees, but said he wanted to focus on reaching a compromise during the meeting. Gatens said being forced to move from the port building would cause his business hardship as it is the optimal place in Waldport for him to harvest and process sand shrimp, which his business specializes in, and he believed he would have a hard time finding another building for rent in the area that met his needs. Port Chair Robin Bishop suggested Gatens look into moving into the building the port will vacate, which he said currently has several open storage buildings behind Lazy Days Cafe and are similarly close to the shore. As the conversation dragged on, the majority of the board stood its ground on evicting Gatens, but was willing to be flexible on when it would happen. The lease only requires 60 days notice from either party to terminate, but the board was previously open to the idea of giving Gatens up to six months.
