Just another Linux geek. It has 8 hot-swappable SATA bays, claims decent cooling with filters, neat form factor. Unfortunately the cooling through the drives is pretty much non-existent. The two fans on the side draw air in but blow onto the hotswap chassis and nothing really draws air through it. As a bonus, it uses a standard ATX power supply and has plenty of room for it. From memory, you can plug in both. It has been a long time though… maybe double check the manual?

Cons: Bad airflow and thus a noisy system with hot drives

If you are one that enjoys the challenge or wants something built more to your own specifications, then the ability to build your own NAS is a great choice. With today's technology, options to do so have never been so prevalent. With Mini-ITX, you can actually do a very powerful build with all the bells and whistles if you so choose. Apart from the real hardware of your NAS build, you will also have to choose a chassis that fits your needs, and depending on the size of your chassis, you may need an SFX power supply as well. This chassis features SECC steel construction with a lockable front door made from aluminum.

Additional Information Customer Reviews 3. The only side openings are from the 3 unused spaces in the cage, which isn't much. This unit is in my home in my basement where the ambient temperature is very cool. A couple of notes: 1. My Seagate drives are now running at 40C - 53C deg Looking at the design a little closer, when the drives are installed, the side fans appear to be blowing on the solid metal of the side of drive cage, rather than through the drives. I advise for a card that has its connectors near the PCI slots going up and not a card where the connectors are placed at the end. The magnetic screen on the side is irritating when picking the case up; it slides off very easily and is placed in a position where you naturally grip when lifting, causing it to slide around in your grip; I'd suggest removing it when moving and re-attaching after you set it down. Let me explain They mention that it has a solid build quality, and is a great case for a NAS.

The SilverStone DS offers unbelievable storage space and versatility in a small form factor.

It just looks really nice , if you're into that. Easy to remove. Secure your cables carefully! Once built this thing is a dream: small, powerful, and fairly quiet. I think it's when my volume is being scrubbed, which beats on the drives for a couple of hours. There are one 4pin peripheral connector and three 15pin SATA connectors, please do not connect all of them from one single cable from the power supply. I highly recommend it. I would have liked to see the case come with a few backup screws to accommodate this. Since the drives in this cage are not meant to be connected directly to the SATA data and power cables, and are not directly exposed from the back, this could be a game over-case destroyer. From the manual, it seems you should plug both in ideally using different cables from the PSU: Guide to hard drive backplane 1. Customers are mixed about the performance of the computer chassis.
