Ski club snow reports
These draw from a number of different sources to paint a broad brush stroke picture of the snow on the ground across the world. The Club cannot take responsibility for avalanche safety through these overviews; where significant changes are expected these will be discussed, but it remains the responsibility of travellers to undertake their own assessments of the avalanche risk specific to their destinations before heading out. A lack of discussion of the avalanche forecast in these overviews is not an indication of low or no risk. Allez les Bleus! Good snow — lots of it — is hitting the French Alps this weekend, with up to two feet expected down on Sunday alone. Time to unpack the boats and snorkels! Good snow will reach much of the rest of the western Alps at this time too, with between a foot and two feet down at most locations. The longer term forecast is beginning to turn slightly more positive, although long term forecasts must always be taken with a pinch of salt as they can and often do change regularly as it moves closer. More consistent cloud cover should bring more consistent snowfall. All will be dependent on temperatures — the Jetstream has been running directly west-to-east over the Alps, pushing in warm air from the Atlantic and Med and barring cooler air moving in from the North; that changes this weekend, and one hopes it stays that way moving forward. The weather situation in the French Alps takes a turn for the better this week, as a large, dense area of low pressure moves over Greenland, Iceland and Norway bringing significantly unsettled weather as far south as the Alps later this week. The first snowfall will fall on Thursday, mostly focused on higher elevations as the freezing line remains camped out in its usual spot around 2,m. This will, however, drop on Thursday afternoon as an occluded front moves through the region, bringing useful snow down to lower slopes for the first time in a while. About 25cm can be expected across higher ground throughout Thursday, with less at lower elevations.
