Early Nordic ancestors had given the land this name due to the Mer that used to rule there. For a time Atmoran settlers and Mer lived in peace with each other. This resulted in a population boom of the Atmorans in Skyrim. Harsh weather and civil war ensured more Atmorans coming to Mereth. Thus, the first major settlement was built - Saarthal. It is believed that the Atmorans' fast reproduction rate posed a demographic threat to the Snow Elves in Skyrim, and this was one cause of the Snow Elves' genocidal campaign against Men. Another theory is that Atmoran settlers had found an unimaginably powerful artifact - the Eye of Magnus , that was said to be buried somewhere in Skyrim. Combination of greed and fear drove Elves to reclaim the artifact for themselves.

Upon discovering the remains of Malrus in Silent Moons Camp , follow the instructions in his journal to unseal the vault near his corpse by activating three shrines around Skyrim. Seek out the Runestone southeast of Dragon Bridge. It is right next to Forebears' Holdout that is visited during the Dawnguard questline. Seek out the Shrine in the mountains overlooking Riverwood. Seek out the Monument at the Mount Anthor Summit. This location is very secluded and requires extensive scaling on horseback. Reaching it by foot is possible. However, the "correct" option is to complete Coming of Age that takes you through Ironbind Barrow. This location has an Overlook at the end that sits right below the monument. Return to Silent Moons Camp where the vault in the floor should now be unlocked, revealing the codex.
