Dozens of spells are available for magically-inclined characters in Skyrim.

Spells are a mage's arsenal of magic and are used throughout the world of Skyrim. They can range from Lightning Bolts to Healing Hands all the way to raising corpses to fight for you. Spells come in many different varities as well, not only offering protection and defense, but also ways to help other attributes, including your smithing. Spells in Skyrim are learned by reading Spell Tomes. Selecting a tome from the player's inventory adds the spell to the Magic menu and destroys the tome. Spells are classified by levels Novice, Apprentice , etc but may be cast by the player regardless of skill provided the player has sufficient magicka. Two aspects to reinforcing magic include fortifying magicka increasing the pool of magicka a player has and fortifying the regeneration rate of magicka.

Skyrim spells

Spells require Magicka to be cast and are frequently used by mages both inside and out of combat. Some spells are used offensively, whereas others may offer defensive, support or other capabilities. Spells require magicka to be cast, each spell requiring its own amount. The amount of magicka needed to cast each spell is dependent on the casters skill level with the relevant School, and can also be decreased using appropriate perks and enchantments. When attempting to cast a spell, if enough magicka is not available, the spell will not be cast. Keeping a close watch not to exhaust magicka supply during combat is important, as magicka regeneration is drastically lowered while fighting. Magicka and magicka regeneration potions and enchantments can be used to counter this. Using Skyrim' s dual-wielding mechanics, it is possible to dual-wield any two spells of the same type together for a more powerful version, or wield as one spell with a one-handed tool such as a shield or a weapon. This does not work for certain spells, such as Master spells, as they must be cast with two hands e. As in previous entries, spells in Skyrim are split into different Schools of magic depending on their use. Skyrim features 5 different schools that serve as skills under the sign of The Mage. Destruction spells focus on delivering damage to opponents, commonly using elemental forces such as flame, frost or shock. Flame spells burn dealing extra damage, frost spells damage the target's stamina , and shock spells damage the target's magicka.

You cannot learn the spell contained in a scroll to cast later, you need a spell tome for that. Some scrolls can be purchased from spell merchants , who will have a random selection of standard scrolls they might sell. Note that scrolls are often found hiding in between rolls of paper, so it might be worthwhile scanning through them. Most scrolls are not found in random treasure, but are only available as fixed loot. To use a scroll, first select it in the inventory or via the Favorites quick menu.
