The Synchro-mesh or SM is a heavy-duty, four-speed manual transmission built by General Motors for use in light and medium duty trucks from to at the factory in Muncie, Indiana ; it was designed to replace the somewhat similar Muncie SM transmission , which had been in production since just after World War II. Some applications beyond one-ton pickup trucks came with larger input shafts. Favored by off-road drivers, the SM has a very low first gear suitable for rock-crawling. The SM has developed a reputation as a highly durable transmission. The "SM" in the transmission's designation does not stand for Synchro-Mesh, contrary to popular belief. GM literature also often referred to this as a CH, referencing Chevrolet. The SM features dual provisions for power take-offs.

Is there any company that makes higher gear ratios for the sm trans? Low gear. I'm hoping to find someone who ideally in my eyes, makes gears where low is equivalent to 1st, 1st is a bit higher geared, and 2nd and 3rd are pretty much the same. I know I can change the diff but that doesn't solve the problem that low gear is useless cause my c15 is a street truck. And I'm not too big of a fan of the big jump from 1st to 2nd. I know I could also put a Vette trans instead of the sm but being a taller guy, the shifter is in a really nice spot. Can anyone shed some insight on my options here? If it's going to cost me as much as a new trans then I'd rather just get a new trans, but if it's a few hundreds then I don't mind. Just trying to come up with a solution. This is a good option if your budget will allow it.
