By Chris Carabott. While Smallville may have just concluded its ninth season, this is just the second season to feature the new, reinvented, Metropolis storyline. Season 8 started strong but faltered towards the latter half of the season. Thankfully, Season 9 doesn't suffer the same fate and offers us some of the best Smallville we've seen in a long time. Clark Kent Tom Welling may look silly to some as the Blur, but it does allow the Smallville writing team the opportunity to delve into the duality of the character without having to turn him into the Man of Steel just yet. The story essentially plays out like a Superman : Year One. Unlike previous seasons, Clark has truly embraced his destiny and is allowing himself to even enjoy his life as a Superhero. He may have to live in the shadows, keeping his face from the public eye, but he carries that S-Shield proudly into battle and over the course of the season it even develops as a symbol that his fans will embrace. As the series entered its ninth year, Clark Kent Tom Welling took a bigger step towards his destiny as Superman. Following the tragedies of the previous season finale, Clark began sporting a proto-Man of Steel costume with the iconic House of El symbol on his chest. But as Clark entered one of his darkest years in the show, one of his greatest foes came to life. Season nine went deeper into the Kryptonian mythology as Major Zod Callum Blue came on board before he became the iconic general. This was also one of the seasons where Smallville began to embrace the larger DC Universe by introducing more heroes and villains. In the fourteenth episode, Clark temporarily gets the power of persuasion after being infected by gemstone Kryptonite. Here, Clark operates as The Blur with his new costume and leaves the House of El symbol all over the city as he makes his rescues. Meanwhile, Lois returns from her mystery trip in the future which becomes a key storyline later on.

April 5, At an uncomfortable "family" dinner, Lois informs Clark that she's breaking up with him. Major Zod becomes the full on, sadistic "General Zod" by killing his pregnant lover, Faeora, because she refused to kneel before him. In the future, the solar powered energy plant LuthorCorp builds is used to harness the solar radiation from the Sun—turning it red and stripping Clark of his powers—and provide Zod and his troops with all of their natural powers. Tess forces Oliver to come to a Queen Industries gala to put the Board at ease, but things go awry when the Toyman shows up with a bomb and a plan to take revenge on Oliver.
