Smooth Radio features a soft adult contemporary radio format. Each FM station broadcasts localised breakfast with networked shows simulcast from London at all other times. Four of the six FM stations, and all three surviving AM frequencies, are owned and operated by Global , with the remaining three FM licences owned by Communicorp UK and run as a franchise. In January , Smooth introduced a new logo and slogan, " Always the best music ". Having previously operated under a number of regional licences, Smooth Radio's owners, GMG Radio , merged its five English stations into one quasi-national station, launching the brand on the Digital One national DAB network on 4 October Most of the output was broadcast from Salford Quays in Manchester , with other programming coming from Castlereagh Street in London. The Competition Commission published its final report into the acquisition on 21 May , requiring Global to sell radio stations in seven locations.

Smooth North West is a regional radio station that is produced and broadcast from Smooth's studios in Spinningfields, Manchester. This station is operated by Global Radio and is part of the Smooth radio network. Smooth North West plays an easy listening format but this wasn't always like this. Researches revelad Jazz's lack of appeal in the north-west, so the station was relaunched as Smooth FM on 1 March Since the station, along with other stations of the Smooth network, are required to provide seven hours of local output on weekdays four hours at weekends and a regional news service. All networked programming originates from Global Radio's London headquarters.
