Organised by the World Snooker Tour , it was the fifth edition of the Tour Championship , first held in , and the 14th and penultimate ranking event of the —23 snooker season , preceding the World Snooker Championship. The last of three events in the Players Series , following the World Grand Prix and the Players Championship , it comprised the top eight players on the one-year ranking list as it stood following the WST Classic. Neil Robertson won the event , defeating John Higgins 10—9 in the final. However, Robertson was unable to defend the title because he was outside the top eight on the one-year ranking list after the WST Classic. Shaun Murphy won the event, defeating Kyren Wilson 10—7 in the final to capture the 11th ranking title of his career. There were 22 century breaks made during the event, the highest of which was a maximum break by Ryan Day , his third in professional competition, during his quarter-final match against Mark Selby.

The —24 snooker season is an ongoing professional snooker season with tournaments played between 26 June and 26 May The World Snooker Tour in the —24 season initially involved professional players, but dropped to players. This includes 65 out of the top 68 players from the prize money rankings after the World Championship Zhao Xintong , Yan Bingtao , and Lu Ning were banned from competition after an independent disciplinary tribunal found them guilty of match-fixing , and are not eligible to compete during the season [4] and 34 of the 35 players who earned a two-year card the previous year Bai Langning was also banned from competition due to his involvement in match-fixing. The next four places went to the top four players on the one-year ranking list who had not already qualified for the tour. A further eight places were assigned through the two Q School events. The finalists from both of the Asia-Oceania Q School events received tour cards. Marco Fu received an invitational tour card.

In the last two seasons Neil Robertson has emerged as the winner, but none of those prior champions have qualified this term. As a result, there may be significant implications for the official world rankings , with the world number one and automatic Crucible spots inside the top 16 up for grabs. There is a longer format in use for the Tour Championship than most other events, with each of the three rounds taking place over 19 frames.
