As I got older, I started learning the history and legend of the area I started to realize that St. Cloud isn't as normal and ordinary as it first appears. Here are five tidbits that I find the most creepy and strange about our lovely town! We've got a place called Sportsman's Island and it's completely abandoned. There's a landmass in the Mississippi River nearly as big as St. Cloud State University and it's a ghost town. The only thing left on the island now is an old baseball diamond and a few old buildings. There's only one way in--through an old abandoned bridge that's no longer in use.

I've lived in the St. Cloud area most of my life. So of course, I know what the Beaver Islands are. But, aside from the view I get of them daily while crossing the University Bridge heading to and from my home in southeast St. Cloud, I really didn't know a whole lot about them. As does much of a once-proud merry-go-round, the slightly bent metal frame of a swing set and the backstop of what was once a softball diamond. But the only sounds heard these days when one sets foot on Sportsman's Island is that of their own footsteps trudging through the brush and overgrown grass.
