Springboks and their inspirational captain, Siya Kolisi, won their three knockout games in France by a single point. I t is a relatively little-known fact that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, was a keen rugby union fan. So what would the famous detective have deduced, almost exactly a century later, from studying the Rugby World Cup? It is easy to imagine him exhaling a cloud of pipe smoke in his Baker Street lodgings and concluding the competition was ultimately defined by what did not happen. All were eventually outflanked by a South African side who were a little bit stronger and cuter than the rest. Should everyone have seen it coming? The bright-eyed Springboks were the defending champions and clobbered New Zealand in their final pre-tournament warm-up game at Twickenham. That same week, by chance, I happened to be standing beside the same coffee machine as the All Black head coach, Ian Foster, and asked how his team were shaping up for the ultimate test. Foster genuinely felt his side were in a good place; little did he know the Boks were in an even better one. When people revisit the knockout stage details the other overarching conclusion will be the absurdly fine margins between success and failure. No team will ever win another Rugby World Cup in the same extraordinary tightrope manner that the Boks won this one: three successive one-point wins in the quarters, semis and final, all chiselled from granite-hard adversity. It was less about individual accomplishment and more a collective case of South Africa refusing to be beaten. Elementary, really. The latest edition was the definitive example.

For a sports-mad country such as South Africa sports has a positive impact. Socio-economic disparity, widespread crime and government corruption all remain a concern for the everyday South African. However, sport has proven to be the great unifying factor in a country trying so desperately to get out of the rut that it finds itself in. While soccer may have the largest following, it is the national rugby team, the Springboks, who have had the greatest success on the global stage. It is safe to say that South Africans are still on a high following this success.

South Africa has completed a successful defence of its Rugby World Cup crown with a tense victory over the All Blacks, who played most of the final without captain Sam Cane after he was sent off in Paris. The final marked the Springboks' third straight one-point win of the tournament, after a quarterfinal victory to oust hosts France and a win over England in the semis. The All Blacks counted the cost of two late missed shots at goal, with Richie Mo'unga unable to slot a 58th-minute sideline conversion, and Jordie Barrett missing a penalty from just over halfway in the 73rd minute. That late penalty was sparked by an intentional knock on from Springboks winger Cheslin Kolbe, who was shown a yellow card and finished the match in tears, barely able to watch from the sideline. It meant both teams had just 14 players on the field at full-time, after New Zealand skipper Cane had his yellow card upgraded to red by the television match official for a 27th-minute high shot on Jesse Kriel.
