Based in Elmira, the publication is owned by Gannett. The Star-Gazette was the first newspaper of the now massive Gannett conglomerate. It was founded as the weekly Elmira Gazette in and became an evening daily in Frank Gannett bought a half-interest in the newspaper in to begin what would eventually be Gannett Co. In , Gannett bought two other competitors in the city: the morning Daily Advertiser and the Sunday Telegram. Nolan Buss, who grew up in Allentown, Pennsylvania and also lived in Virginia, moved to Caton in to join his cousin in opening a hops for beer farm. Earlier this year, Buss seized on another business opportunity when he found out the Old Pioneer sports bar on South Main Street in Elmira was available. Buss purchased the business and renamed it Teall's Tavern, tapping into a local legend that Elmira was named for Elmira Teall, daughter of early settler Nathan Teall , who opened the original Teall's Tavern around on Sullivan Street. Buss has an interest in history and an even bigger passion for community service, and that's what he hopes to provide at Teall's, along with generous portions of Newtown nachos, sidewinder fries and other house specials. This is a place where friends can gather to share things that are going on in their lives," said Buss, a Virginia Army Guard veteran who served tours in Iraq and Qatar. Clara Clemens, the daughter of Samuel L. Clemens Mark Twain , was out for a sleigh ride with her future husband, Russian pianist Ossip Gabrilowitsch. Grabilowitsch, who was driving, lost control of the horse and held helplessly to the reins. At the top of a hill the sleigh overturned, and Miss Clemens was thrown out. When the sleigh turned over the Russian leaped to the ground and caught the horse by the head, stopping it as it was about to plunge over the bank dragging Miss Clemens, whose dress had caught in the runner, over to her death. Clara Clemens was uninjured but in shock, while Gabrilowitsch sprained his ankle.
