The creatively named Stranger Things 3: The Game is an action-adventure beat-'em-up where you play through the events of the third season of Stranger Things. This game really is one giant spoiler for the show. When I write "play through the events of" I mean quite literally that there are lines and scenes that unfold exactly as they do in season three. As a result, I wouldn't recommend playing this if you haven't finished the third season, or if you plan on watching it anytime soon so as not to spoil it for yourself. However, if you don't really care for watching the show but still want to know what happens, then perhaps you're the person the game is aimed at, because, to be quite honest, you'd have a lot more fun if you just watched Stranger Things. The game has you exploring the not-so-peaceful country town of Hawkins, completing quests, solving puzzles and uncovering the secrets it has to hide.

As an old-school arcade beat-em-up with a free-flowing open world structure, its story, characters, and ideas are all tied directly to the third season of the Netflix show that inspired it, sometimes to a fault. Without going into spoiler territory, the story in Stranger Things 3: The Game feels like an abridged version of the story told throughout season 3. Though its roughly 8-hour campaign has more detail than you'd get watching a recap or reading a well-written wiki summary, it should surprise no one to hear that this version lacks the same emotional punch as the show. However, it does stick close enough to that script that I would strongly urge people to watch the new season before even turning it on. There's an uncanny quality to Stranger Things 3: The Game's look. Ironically, it reminds me of a fake video game that might be made for a TV show: Its art style resembles bit consoles, but is clearly more detailed than any SNES or Sega Genesis game could have been. Though there is a uniform style, it's derived from a hodgepodge of influences. Longer stretches of dialogue come in text boxes with so-so hand-drawn character portraits, evoking 8- and bit era RPGs , but you'll also see a fair amount of floating pixelated flavor text a la Monkey Island. While it sometimes seems scattershot, it all blends together surprisingly well, evoking the nostalgic warm-and-fuzzies you want from something designed to match Stranger Things' blanket "retro" vibe. Similarly, its structure and mechanics feel designed to remind you of "old games" generally without taking too heavily from any one, while also borrowing ideas from more modern games. At any given time, your party of two characters the second of which is either controlled by AI or another player in local co-op can roam free around familiar areas in and around a carefully pixelated version of Hawkins, Indiana. The story is broken into chapters, each of which features a set of missions that roughly but faithfully follow the plots of various groups of characters from the show. You can complete these missions on your own time, in any order, which gives you an excuse to explore the town and revel in the experience of being inside the Stranger Things universe.

Stranger Things 3: The Game is a note-for-note retelling of Stranger Things season three, released day and date with the popular Netflix series. This is a little ironic since the show is set in , just before the Nintendo Entertainment System debuted in select markets in the U. Namely, it goes on a little too long and follows the source material a little too closely. Sttranger Things 3: The Game ST3 is a cooperative brawler featuring most of the cast of the hit Netflix show, and follows their adventures as they face off against yet another eldritch monstrosity turning their peaceful midwest town into a realm of nightmares. The game takes place from an isometric viewpoint which works well with the brawler-style gameplay. Each character has a different attack and special ability based on their appearance and actions in the show.

Practically every film property had its own video game equivalent, usually doing nothing more than offering gamers an easy way to boost their gamerscore or trophy count. Nowadays, TV is big budget. Dragons and excessive nudity big budget. And on paper, Stranger Things is one of the easiest translations. Jam-packed with nostalgia and pop culture references? Plenty of monsters and splashes of horror? Check squared. The basic principle is the same, with the entire game recreating events from the third season alongside some cute storylines not featured in the show. Dustin, for instance, has a can of bug spray for a weapon, which is great for hitting an enemy both at distance and at close range. He also has the ability to hack locked doors and open keypad-sealed chests with a small QTE mini-game.

Contra: Operation Galuga Review While it sometimes seems scattershot, it all blends together surprisingly well, evoking the nostalgic warm-and-fuzzies you want from something designed to match Stranger Things' blanket "retro" vibe. Each character has their own special ability, and several of these can be used to aid in traversal or gain access to hidden secrets. The gameplay is serviceable, but there's not much here to draw in people who just want a solid title or something to enhance their experience of the show. The developers even threw in a Smash Bros. It adds the kind of depth needed to support the dialogue-heavy moments that build up to what feels like a genuine recreation of the Stranger Things world. Regardless of who you choose, the combat is very simple and repetitive. You can help: share a screenshot, make a video, or start a new discussion! All Platforms. These range from an upgraded wallet and the classic nail bat to more exotic items such as a Wonder Woman costume or a belching contest trophy. The story is broken into chapters, each of which features a set of missions that roughly but faithfully follow the plots of various groups of characters from the show. The crafting and equipment system is very thin as well. Even better, dropping out is just as easy, and AI takes over seamlessly if the second player wants to quit. This is a little ironic since the show is set in , just before the Nintendo Entertainment System debuted in select markets in the U. As mentioned before, due to the map the fetch quests are tedious, and the combat is lacking in what the show prides itself on: horror.

A bit callback video game is well-suited to tap that same viewership vein. In Stranger Things 3: The Game which is confusingly the second Stranger Things game , you control the main cast from an isometric perspective to explore the town of Hawkins, Indiana, and beat up monsters and bad guys as you play through the events of the third season.

Sharing the mediocrity would be an improvement over slogging through it alone, but the size of the game demands too much for "couch co-op" to feel convenient or relevant. The other ones may think it is repetitive and lacking strong characters. There are a few novel moments that mix things up — without any spoilers, a couple of well-made boss fights and a mid-game chase sequence come to mind. True to tie-in game form, many of the story missions take cues from the show's plot, but those cues are used as excuses to throw you into combat areas not seen in the source material.
