Somehow word had apparently spread that I seemed to consider buying anything and everything for sale…In actuality I had been complaining about having to deal subaru 1982 wagon snow chains in the mountains on the few occasions that I actually went, and the car for sale was a 4WD Subaru…, subaru 1982 wagon. Welcome back! I guess if we were continuing with the clever alliterative names for things I would call this Wagon Wednesday. Actually, you know what? Screw it; I am calling it that. One of them is even four-wheel-drive! Neither one of those cars is likely a good deal.

You won't find any Subaru s in U-Wrench yards these days I haven't seen a discarded since the early s , but I still find plenty of Malaise-Era Subarus from the period during which they were mocked for their small size in novelty songs. Here's a seriously loaded by earlys standards Subaru Leone four-wheel-drive wagon, found last fall in a yard just south of Denver. Back in those days, Subaru USA just called this car "the Subaru" and used the trim levels as confusing model names. There was the base model with no name, the mid-grade DL, and the high-end GL. Four-wheel-drive was optional on Subarus at this point, though nearly all Colorado buyers paid for this feature. Unlike later all-wheel-drive systems with center differentials, this setup was true four-wheel-drive, which would tear up your tires or worse if you drove for too long on dry pavement with 4WD engaged. This proved very confusing for many owners of these cars as well as those with four-wheel-drive-equipped Toyota Tercels and Honda Civics , a bit later in the decade. By far the coolest optional feature on this car is the rare "third eye" center-mounted driving light, which lives behind this flip-up panel in the center of the grille and was actuated via a dash-mounted switch. Did I buy the entire grille and third-eye assembly, for installation as a ceiling-mounted work light in my garage? You bet I did! With just over , miles on the clock, this car appears to have been very well cared-for during its life. There's a bit of rust in the usual spots, but nothing too severe by the standards of a nearyear-old Japanese car.

The Subaru Leone is a compact car produced by the Japanese car manufacturer Subaru from to It was released as a replacement for the Subaru and was the predecessor of the Subaru Impreza. Many of the Subarus that came to the United states after Malcolm Bricklin's hilariously rickety s but before the current era of everything-all-wheel-drive outdoorsy commuters tended to aim for the economy-minded car shoppers looking for a cheap and efficient Japanese car. These cars, the first- and second-generation Leones , were small enough to be the butt of popular-culture jokes , but they sold pretty well in coastal California. Almost made it to , miles. That's about 2, miles per year of this car's life. I have worked on a few of these cars, and words such as "rugged" and "solid" don't come to mind when handling their components.

It was still clear in the city and people were looking at the snow covered cars coming off the GW like we ha been teleported from Minneapolis. Little did I know it was due to another, more sinister reason: a crack somewhere in the exhaust was leaking carbon monoxide into the cabin, and because I had the windows closed and the heater on in December, I was slowly asphyxiating myself.
