Goombas are a de-evolved form of Dinohattanites appearing in the Super Mario Bros. They are the film's equivalent of the Goombas from Super Mario Bros.
Goombas are Dinohattanites which have been devolved into this form. Goombas have tiny saurian heads on disproportionately large bodies. Their heads are either round, snake-like, or raptor-like, depending on their dinosaur ancestry. While they have enhanced strength and make very loyal soldiers, they are also known to have low intelligence and can be easily distracted. Goombas were once Dinohattanites, a species of strikingly Human-like reptilians from an alternate dimension populated by dinosaurs transported after the asteroid impact 66 million years ago. As the dimension deteriorated due to its resources being exhausted, the King placed General Koopa in charge of energy conservation, although Koopa took the opportunity to research and develop de-evolution technology, eventually launching a coup against the King, de-evolving the King into a giant, sapient fungus and slaughtering most of the King's supporters, including the Portal Guardians, a religious organization dedicated to protecting the remains of the meteor and a portal to Earth generated by its energy.

The people who freaked out over the now-delayed Sonic the Hedgehog movie and its weird character designs have obviously never crossed paths with 's Super Mario Bros. Directed by the husband-and-wife team of Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, the live-action adaptation of Nintendo 's moneymaker aimed for the stars but landed firmly in the drain pipe. In an interview with The Guardian , the late Bob Hoskins, who portrayed Mario in the film, was asked, "If you could edit your past, what would you change? Even though the source material is bonkers enough to begin with, the movie took it to the next level with a puzzling storyline and equally bizarre aesthetic. Looking at the plot on paper, however, it's similar to the premise of Super Mario World and the other games in the series. Along the way, they meet and interact with popular characters and creatures from the franchise and adopt the Super Mario Bros. This sounds great and just like those days spent burning up that NES cartridge until the wee hours of the morning, right? Well, someone forgot to actually play the game and take any notes, because this movie played out like a bad prequel to Theodore Rex with a Tommy Wiseau-penned script. Reportedly, the script was rewritten on a daily basis while the actors drank away their sorrows to cope with the chaos around them. Moreover, the designs for the other-dimensional creatures looked like a merger of the Muppets , Tim Burton's Beetlejuice , and a wild weekend in Ibiza. Gone was the cute aesthetic of the adorable shiitake mushrooms and cuddly dinosaurs, making way for nightmare fuel in the shape of hulking dino-humanoids with tiny heads. The Goombas looked nothing like they did in the video games, wearing red trench coats with spikes on their shoulders and sporting the same vacant expression as the studio execs who greenlit this project. While the whole movie could be a giant WTF moment in itself, the Koopa Troop stooges stole the limelight in a hilariously bad scene. In fact, it's one of those it's-so-bad-that-it's-good sequences that should be immortalized in cinema history for future generations to relive and cherish. The peak of all peaks arrives around the minute mark in the film.

Toad is a Dinohattan inhabitant in the Super Mario Bros. He is introduced as a street performer and devout critic of President Koopa , playing anti-Koopa songs in revolt against him, detailing all the bad that he has done in their world. He is initially a Dinohattanite with a punk-inspired style and look, with a unique spiral-patterned buzz haircut. He is permanently transformed into a Goomba by President Koopa early in the film. The film character appears to be loosely based on the character Toad from the Super Mario video games based on namesake and role of assisting the brothers and princess. Aside from this, his blue vest is the only direct reference to the video games' version of Toad. Earlier scripts of the movie had Toad die during the Devo Chamber sequence, with the friendly Goomba role being fulfilled by an unrelated character "Hark".

It is implied that the Goombas in Koopa's Tower are permanent residents of the Goomba Barracks, as shown when Mario and Luigi escape from said tower, and they take one of the mattresses the Goombas sleep on to do so. The film is extended by twenty minutes in this cut, with additional scenes including Koopa devolving a technician into slime for the crime of sneezing, Mario's rivalry with the mafia-affiliated Scapelli plumbing company, and an anti-Koopa rap by Spike and Iggy at the Boom Boom Bar, backed up with scantily clad lizard dancers.
