It calls for some organisation, so we try to write a menu plan each week, and from that we can produce a shopping list. It takes time, but food is an important part of life here! Ropers is on the industrial estate at Playa Honda, opposite Deiland. They have a fabulous fresh meat counter there, manned by competent butchers who will cut and trim your meat as required. Their fruit and veg is excellent, and they have a good selection of fresh herbs as well. There is also an interesting cold counter, with some unusual cheeses and cold meats. You can also buy dried weighed goods here and some gourmet products. Mercadona is relatively new to the island and there are four stores, two in Arrecife, one in Playa Honda and the newest in Puerto del Carmen. They have a big range of product, and are great value for money. Their Hacienda range is popular as an alternative low cost to main brands. Eurospar stores always have an excellent fishmongers and butchers. The staff will prepare fish and meat to your preference. Ikea meatballs are a staple, as are their excellent range of crispbreads. Lidl is the best place on the island to buy good bread, shellfish the big boxes of prawns are fabulous and dairy produce like yoghurts, creams and cheeses, and Aldi has an interesting range of stuff, including over locally sourced lines.

We are going to be staying in Playa Blanca in April. Could someone let me know if there is a large supermarket there and where it is situated. Thank you. Day 5 on this trip report shows you where the big supermarket is. Also Ropers down at Papagayo end would be one of the two bigger one's there.

Thank you. There's Superdino Papagayo, in San Marcial should be the closest to you, which we use, easy to get parked and has a good selection and butcher counter. There a larger one in the main town but parking is a bit more difficult for that though it has a butcher and fishmonger. The following link may help. There a hiperdino express in El Pueblo Comercial Cemtre in Las Colorados, limit selection and definately more expensive. If you pick the car up at the airport there's a Mercadona near it as well which is worth considering of your doing a big shop. There's a Pescaderia in the main harbour in PB , which we use , easy to park neat which is best for fresh fish and helpful staff as well. Hiperdino, opposite the bus station is probably your best bet. However, for a big first shop, we normally go to Lidl and Mercadona near Playa Honda. More choice, and slightly cheaper.

I am visiting Lanzarote in December and staying, self-catering, in Playa Blanca. Which is the best and biggest supermarket on the island within reasonable distance I have a car. Does Lanzarote have anything close to the wonderful hypermarkets often seen in France. Trev is quite right, we wish we did have hypermarkets. The best on offer for you in Playa Blanca is Hyperdino, a supermarket in the centre, it has underground parking, and you will be able to buy most things you need at this place. I am a Playa Blanca resident, if you tell me where you are staying I'll give you directions to Hyperdino.
