While it has considerable faults in my opinion and wasn't quite the conclusion I was hoping for, I can't say that it entirely disappointed me, and I think the series is worth a reread in a year or two — if only to catch all the little details that I keep thinking back on! Regardless, I'm really happy I read this series and I will definitely be revisiting it in the future.

Updated: Apr 3, I know I've mentioned this before, but time moves strangely at the gas station. Compounding the confusion, I haven't always been the most ardent supporter of linear storytelling. Some of my tales run concurrently with others. Some, I don't even remember writing This is going to be my best attempt at ordering the tales. But remember, I have an infamously shaky memory and a long history of imagining things.

Again, I will emphasizinate that that is open for debate. It's really kind of dumb. I did enjoy the use of seriousness in some places, though, especially as those moments related to Jack's past and his coming to terms with things that he had previously only hinted at. Please try again. While none of the books in the series managed to garner a 5-star review from me, I obviously enjoyed them enough that I kept on reading them, almost one after another. The return and fleshing-out of beloved characters like Jerry, Rosa, O'Brien, and Spencer is equally welcome, and while I wasn't thrilled about some of the things included in their backstories, I really liked the element that Jack's occasional mind-sharings brought. Any similarity to real persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental and, frankly, pretty weird. A must read for anyone who likes low-brow comedy in their cosmic horror. Anyone who read any of this series would know that's probably the most you can expect from the story. No other mutt cheers you up from a rut like Gaston! You betcha!

Following the events of the last book, we pick up with Jack Townsend — our favorite chronic insomniac, failed gas station owner, and watchman of the portal between worlds — as he struggles to put together the pieces of a mystery that has haunted him since childhood. Among a plethora of various weirdos in this book, we also meet Wendy who is apparently Jack's sister by way of foster care. Community Reviews. Jack's ever-mysterious past gets hung out to dry in this book, complete with a psychological twist that is far more shocking and mind-blowing than when we found out he didn't have fatal familial insomnia. What a great pleasure to meet Jack, Jerry and Rosa again!
