Friends gather at a lodge to commemorate a friend, who drowned in a lake nearby 3 years ago. They tell each other scary stories and suddenly find themselves in one.
Arranging reunion weekends with ex-university housemates is a bit like trying to get tickets to Hamilton. The university friends in anthology horror comedy Tales From The Lodge have forgotten the weed, unfortunately, as well as — the horror, the horror! Russell Johnny Vegas and Emma Sophie Thompson are just relieved to be away from their young children for a whole night. Nicola Stephenson has great fun as Amanda, who rediscovers her mojo after going on a ghost walk and flirting with the earnest American leading them. It reminded me of scenes from Ghost Stories and was the only element in the film that I found frightening. Poor Emma is too busy and exhausted to come up with a proper, filmed story, and just gets to vomit up her feelings about childbirth. Meanwhile Miki offers cupcake decorating, and tries to fit in while asking questions that are often a little too probing.

Several friends visit a secluded lake house to mourn the death of their buddy. As their weekend away progresses, each shares a fictional story but finds themselves in a scary story of their own. Written and Directed by Abigail Blackmore , Tales from the Lodge has a lot of unique anthology stories within. However, the ending is a gross exploitation that is simply inexcusable in this day and age. When their close pal Jonesy dies by suicide, five friends head out to his lakeside lodge to scatter ashes and pay their respects. Paul Dustin Demri-Burns throws a wrench in the weekend by allowing his new girlfriend to tag along. The rest are a bit unnerved by this, as it should be a deeply close, personal moment for them and not a time to bring around a new fling. As they settle in and reconnect, they each begin to tell short tales one-by-one — stories of masked killers, horny ghost possessions, a zombie apocalypse, and more. While they try to have a good time, despite the sadness and tension looming over them, they soon realize they might be at the center of their own real-life horror. While anthology series may be a bit played out, Tales from the Lodge utilizes it differently. The tales ranged from truly creepy to hokey to seriously funny, and all five were a ton of fun to watch. But the film still focuses on the main story of dealing with the death of a close friend. While the subject matter is heavy, the film maintains a dark comedic tone. The first two parts of the movie are fantastic examples of effective short films. She is Jonesy.

By Frank Scheck. The end credits of her new British horror comedy anthology film featuring vignettes as related by different characters, reveal that each episode was actually directed by its central performer. To be fair, anthology films are almost always hit or miss, but this one features far more of the latter. The film is infused with very British mordant humor in its depiction of a weekend reunion between five old college friends, all pushing forty, and one extra guest. The group has gathered at an isolated cabin in the woods to scatter the ashes of their mutual friend who committed suicide three years earlier, placing them at the same lake where he drowned himself. The group includes Joe Mackenzie Cook and Martha Laura Fraser , who are dealing with the fact that Joe has recently been diagnosed with a potentially fatal heart condition; Emma Sophie Thompson and Russell Johnny Vegas , thrilled just to be away from their young children for the weekend; and perennial bachelor Paul Dustin Demri-Burns , who has brought along his much younger girlfriend Miki Kelly Wenham. Since scattering ashes only takes so long, the group wiles away the time by relaxing, drinking and, you guessed it, telling scary tales to keep each other amused. Each major character delivers one with a personal bent, such as Joe being subjected to horrific medical tests at the hands of a mad doctor and Paul making the mistake of lending his car to the wrong person. The eventual revelation that the characters are actually involved in a horrific scenario of their own feels simultaneously undercooked and over the top. The pacing is far too sluggish throughout, a fatal flaw in movies of this type.
