Coming to the acting department, The Eyes of My Mother is Kika Magalhaes' show all the way as she carries the entire film on her own and delivers a bone-chilling performance. On an overall scale, The Eyes of My Mother is a gruesome example of body horror that's definitely not for the easily distressed and packs many moments that are powerful enough to linger on long after the credits have rolled. Arthouse horror flick "The Eyes of My Mother" actively alienates viewers by presenting episodes in a woman's life from a post-human, God-like perspective. When you see Francisca Olivia Bond and then later Kika Magalhaes , a shy, emotionally disturbed woman who grows up alone after her parents' sudden death, you don't see her from a subjective point-of-view, but rather from the perspective of a distant, omniscient observer. The film is divided into three chapters, as if we're looking at snapshots from a morbid scrapbook. In that sense, Pesce doesn't encourage viewers to get inside Francisca's head, but rather to see her as a beautiful dust mote: she looks small when filmed in landscape shots that emphasize waving tree branches, distant shapes and the passage of time. Pesce's style is not necessarily uninteresting, but it does get frustrating when you consider how it's applied to Francisca's narrative. We watch as young Francisca suffers a series of escalating traumas: her mother Diana Agostini is murdered by a sadistic traveling salesman Will Brill shortly before her father Paul Nazak dies quietly in his sleep.

A must see. For people who are expecting a slasher or bloody and gore film then this isn't one for you If this alone doesn't get you excited to see the film, you're probably not a horror fan. I wouldn't have enjoyed watching Josef Mengele do his "work", either. Agostini is interesting in her small role as the mother that tries to teach her daughter things. English Portuguese. The Eyes of My Mother is a very unsettling watch, you dread what is to come and literally cringe at the progression. The soundtrack of the film was interesting. More to explore. The mix of English and sub-titled Portuguese is nicely done. Incredibly well-made. She shows Francisca the lens from an eyeball and explains how we see the world through this small biological marvel.

The Eyes of My Mother starts behind the wheel of a truck.

They seem quite a bit older than normal parents' age which makes me wonder, but also with something that happens in the film. A girl advances through her lonely, sociopathic life, using the surgical skills imparted by her mother to slice up the lives of others. Director Nicolas Pesce makes great use of the film's short running time under 80 minutes and relatively claustrophobic atmosphere. The soundtrack was good and that is not only with music, but with dialogue from other films as well. This is the work of a master, not a novice. So begins the equivalent of a lyrical tone-poem of a film. Not many films take my breath away and leave me in a stunned silence, however, this film has done exactly that. Her character, Francesca, behaves, in some instances, very similarly to Asami. Something else is that this film has good writing. Primarily, I watch movies for the purposes of being entertained.
