In this appealing caper film, Brad Pitt plays Jerry, a bumbling criminal, and Julia Roberts is his girlfriend, Samantha, who desperately wants him to leave the mob. His girlfriend Samantha hates his job and asks him to stop. She even threatens to leave him if he accepts another assignment. However, Jerry sets out again: he has to go to Mexico to pick up an antique pistol - The Mexican. If he doesn't complete his task, Jerry waits for the bullet. When the principals feel the job isn't progressing fast enough, Samantha is kidnapped to pressure Jerry User name. Voor een blockbusterfilm met twee sterren in de hoofdrol is dit een behoorlijk tegendraadse, weirde en vreemde film. Ik was hem iedere maal mis gelopen, maar gisterenavond toch maar eens op gezet. Tja, moeilijk Soms was ie redelijk spannend, regelmatig komisch, soms wat langdradig.

I like it that way. Considering how badly Jerry and Samantha--the Brad and Julia characters--get along when they're together, a whole movie involving them would be a long, shrill slog. Gandolfini comes in from left field and provides a character with dimensions and surprises, bringing out the best in Roberts. Their dialogue scenes are the best reason to see the movie. The setup: "The Mexican" of the title is a priceless handgun that a Mafioso named Margolese Gene Hackman desires above all else. Margolese is in prison for complicated reasons, and Jerry, who was sort of responsible, has been trying to work off his debt and stay alive by running errands for Margolese's lieutenant Nayman Bob Balaban. But Jerry is unreliable because he's under the thumb of the demanding Samantha.
