A documentary crew arrives at the offices of Dunder Mifflin to observe the employees and learn about modern management. Manager Michael Scott tries to paint a happy picture, while sales rep Jim fights with his nemesis Dwight and flirts with receptionist Pam. A consultant arrives to teach the staff about tolerance and diversity but Michael insists on imparting his own knowledge. Meanwhile, Jim struggles to keep hold of a lucrative contract extension. Michael doesn't want to upset the staff so he gets Dwight to pass on news about the company's reduced health provisions. Fed up with his nosiness, Jim and Pam pretend they are suffering from a variety of conditions including Ebola, Mad Cow Disease, spontaneous dentohydroplosion, hotdog fingers, nano-robot infection, inverted penis and anal fissures.

Created as an adaptation by Greg Daniels of the British series of the same name , it is a mockumentary that follows the day-to-day lives of the employees of the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of Dunder Mifflin , a fictional paper supply company. The Office aired a short first season in that consisted of six episodes. This was followed by a full-length second season in —06 that consisted of 22 episodes, and a third season in —07, with 25 episodes. Due to the — Writers Guild of America strike , the fourth season that aired in —08 consisted of 19 episodes. The sixth season aired during —10 and consisted of 26 episodes. A total of episodes of The Office aired over nine seasons. The first set of webisodes, titled The Accountants , consisted of ten episodes and ran between the second and third seasons. Kevin's Loan consisted of four episodes and ran between the fourth and fifth seasons. The Outburst aired in the middle of the fifth season and consisted of four episodes. Blackmail aired during the end of the fifth season and consisted of four episodes. Subtle Sexuality aired during the beginning of the sixth season and consisted of three episodes.

The American TV version of the award-winning British sitcom The Office opens Season 1 by establishing its faux documentary format, as Michael Scott Steve Carell , regional manager of a branch office of Dunder Mifflin Paper, jumps through hoops to convince the filmmakers that he presides over a happy, well-running ship. This is but one of Michael's many pathetic self-delusions: he also thinks he's the epitome of "cool," he's convinced that everything he says is a laugh riot, and even worse, he actually labors under the misapprehension that he is qualified for his job. Meanwhile, sales rep Jim Halpert John Krasinski continually cooks up methods to undermine his hated cube-mate, the obnoxious know-it-all Dwight Schrute Rainn Wilson ; receptionist Pam Beesly Jenna Fischer continually deals with Michael's insensitivities and flubs; and office temp Ryan Howard B. Novak acts mostly as an observer of the insanity around him.
