For years, studios have tried their hardest to resuscitate the classic comedy brimming with memorable one-liners and slapstick humor in a landscape of blockbuster franchises, yet nothing stands out on its own. However, in brushing aside the humor, The Out-Laws becomes more involved in its efforts than the actual execution. This flattens many of the details that could potentially make it memorable. The movie takes some very hard turns and at times will go miles per hour in a cul de sac, but not in a way that is natural to the absurdities grounded in reality. As luck would have it, his soon-to-be-in-laws, Billy Brosnan and Lilly Barkin suddenly show up. As the robbery unfolds and Owen observes the situation carefully, he gets a feeling that Billy and Lilly might actually be behind the robbery and works his hardest to prove it. Unfortunately, along the way of his figuring things out and pinning them to the bank robbery, Parker gets kidnapped, which forces Owen to team up with her parents on a questionable crime spree to save her.

Sex and Skin: This entire movie goes by without Devine showing his bare ass, thus defying all odds and expectations for a Happy Madison movie. Our Take: Smooth-brained comedies like this really put me in a mood. The Out-Laws started that way, but surprised me by pushing past the usual limitations of a puerile, moronic premise like this and working its way through a series of different puerile, moronic developments.

In fairness, Sandler, whose film company Happy Madison produced The Out-Laws, probably deserves minimal blame for this debacle. Director Tyler Spindel, working from a script by Ben Zazove and Evan Turner, shoulders most of the blight, owing to heavy-handed direction, a boilerplate premise, and a script that squeezes its cast so hard, we hate to think of the bruising. The Out-Laws follows the time-worn premise of all those wedding comedies where a hapless main character clashes with his future in-laws. If Meet the Parents helped revive this genre 20 years ago, The Out-Laws might well force it back into retirement. The script offers nothing in the way of innovation or suspense, except for perhaps a bank manager character that orgasms when she opens the vault. Brosnan and Barkin, both of whom know a thing or two about heist movies and techno-thrillers, manage to wade through the mire as best they can, and at least seem to have a good time soldiering through the action. Both also have a deadpan delivery that allows them to play the straight man against the surrounding mayhem.
