The series portrays the zany hijinks of an American family of wildlife documentary filmmakers known as the Thornberrys, which consist of the British nature documentary television host Nigel, the thornberrys, his wife and camera operator Marianne, their year-old daughter Debbie, their the thornberrys daughter Eliza, their adopted son Donnie, and a chimpanzee named Darwin, the thornberrys. The series focuses in particular on Eliza, who has a magical ability to communicate with animals. Originally pitched by Klasky Csupo as an adult animated sitcom for Fox[2] the the thornberrys was then retooled as a family-friendly animated series for Nickelodeon and premiered on September 1,as the eleventh Nicktoon and the third overall produced by the studio following Rugrats and Aaahh!!!

When the Thornberrys are forced to spend the night in the middle of the Savanna, Eliza seizes the opportunity to go hunting with a pride of lions, only to discover that Debbie is about to become a midnight snack. When Darwin is miffed by Eliza, he sets off into the jungle to prove himself capable of his natural instincts. After a "scary" night in the jungle, he stumbles upon an empty shack and quickly takes refuge. When the family that owns the shack returns home to find Darwin, they could not be more pleased with their guest of honor. A swarm of mysterious, prankster marmosets overrun the Thornberry camp, and it is up to Eliza to beat them at their own game.

A sequel to the film, as well as a crossover with characters from Rugrats titled Rugrats Go Wild , was released on June 13, Eliza Thornberry is playing with a family of cheetahs in Kenya after their mother, Akela, puts her in charge of the cubs. When Eliza accidentally strays too far from the cheetahs, poachers in a helicopter kidnap one of the cheetah cubs, Tally. Eliza is determined to save the cub, causing her older sister Debbie to tell her family about Eliza's antics. This prompts her caring but straight-laced grandmother Cordelia to send Eliza to a boarding school in London for her safety - much to Debbie's dismay since Debbie wanted a normal life. Upon arriving, Eliza discovers that her pet chimpanzee , Darwin, is stowed away in her suitcase. After having a dream in which Shaman Mnyambo tells her that Tally is alive and to go rescue him, Eliza convinces her roommate Sarah Wellington to buy plane tickets for her and Darwin to return to Africa. While taking a train from Nairobi , they encounter an injured black rhinoceros , who was shot at the river by the same poachers who kidnapped Tally. They jump off the train to save the rhino with the help of veterinarians Bree and Sloan Blackburn. Meanwhile, Debbie is left alone with her feral adoptive younger brother Donnie at their Comvee, while their parents, Nigel and Marianne, go to film a solar eclipse at Tembo Valley.
