Have grown up with this my whole life so it always brings back so much nostalgic fondness, but regardless of that particular notion, it's genuinely one of my favourite animated works ever put on celluloid.

Multitudinous TV and film adaptations from all around the world, animated and live action, filled screens for years. Indeed, saw two British all-star cast animated films, though only one seems to still be especially fondly remembered today. Like the novel, the film follows the adventures of Mole, Ratty, Badger, and Mr Toad through the beautiful English countryside along a riverbank. Many say the story is a polemic about knowing your place in the world — given its Edwardian middle-class roots, this is not an unfair interpretation. But when he rediscovers his old home, abandoned by him during a bout of spring cleaning when he became bored, he realises what has been missing from his new life, and remembers the pleasures of home. With this foundation restored, Mole can take his place in the wider world and help Ratty and Badger try to knock some sense into Toad. He is certainly the oldest of the characters and the most paternal. His character is the least fleshed out in this adaptation but I do wonder if he has gained his authority by having been through all the trials and tribulations as the rest of the characters in his youth, and learning from those experiences. Perhaps the most intriguing element of the animation is its visual methods of portraying the difference in attitudes between Toad and the rest of the lead characters. And then, we are introduced to Toad!

A miserable Toad appears in court on trial, where he is manipulated into forfeiting his right to have a lawyer and is denounced by everyone present, including the sweep's supposed widow.
