The pre-decimal threepence 3d , usually simply known as a threepence or threepenny bit, was a unit of currency equalling one eightieth of a pound sterling, or three pence sterling. Maundy Threepence have been issued for centuries they are still being struck today for ceremonial purposes , and initially the circulating threepence were identical in design. Starting in , they were made different - first with a design featuring three oak sprigs then this one with a Tudor Rose , while the Maundy threepence continued with the traditional crowned numeral reverse. This type was only issued for King George VI, and only until almost all the examples were subsequently melted down. A twelve-sided nickel brass threepence was also introduced in ; the two formats were issued in parallel until the brass version finally supplanted the silver threepence. Threepence coins issued in circulated for 27 years until "Decimal Day", 15 February , and ceased to be legal tender after 31 August Unlike some of the larger denominations, they were not re-denominated to a decimal value when the decimal Pound Sterling was introduced. The Australian Threepence or three pence is a small silver coin which was used in the Commonwealth of Australia prior to decimalisation. It has the same dimensions and composition as the British pre-decimal threepence , from which it is derived for a time, the coins circulated in parallel and were interchangeable in Australia - but not in the United Kingdom. The reverse of the first type of Australian threepence coins features the Coat of Arms. In , this new design superseded it - featuring three stalks of grain ; the old type of coins remained in circulation. Coins issued in were withdrawn at decimalisation in after 22 years in circulation , but have never been formally demonetised and are still legal tender. The obverse of the coin shows the bare uncrowned head of King George VI facing left. Three ears of wheat held by a curved ribbon.
