Series 5 continued the path set by its immediate predecessor , and produced a series which was similar yet slightly more subdued, the most notable similarities being the Race to Verbier in Episode 8 and the second cheap car challenge in Episode 6. The series was notable for an ill-fated segment which appeared in most of the episodes; Restoration Ripoff. Throughout the series a selection of unrestored yet significant historic cars were presented by James May, with the viewers deciding the eventual winner in the form of ARX, a car believed to have been Paddy Hopkirk's Mini. Due to the nature of rallying, it was discovered the papers matched but the car itself didn't, and the segment, which was most likely planned for Series 6 or 7, was quietly shelved.
