The Hollin Street project in Blackburn is able to home up to 10 families in self-contained flats for up to two years before long-term housing is found. Ian Bell, head of housing at Twin Valley Homes, which runs the site, said the scheme was vital to ensure families had somewhere to go in times of crisis. And he said that the flats were more important than ever in the current housing crisis and recession. There are eight two-bedroomed flats, one designed for a disabled person, and two three-bedroomed flats. The facility also contains a training room and a communal lounge for the use of the residents. Mr Bell said the housing association already operates a unit for young homeless people in James Street and this site replaces the Police Street accommodation for families where there were just seven units, all with just shared facilities.
