How important is the co-op designation as opposed to just stating on your resume that you've worked with your employer for a certain time? The reason I am asking is because I would love to go on co-op but a ubc science co-op month commitment means I will have to give up 2 summers, ubc science co-op, during which I would like to venture other opportunities

Co-operative education Co-op integrates the academic education classroom-based learning of interested and qualified students with relevant, supervised, and paid work experience work-based learning with employer organizations. Co-op students gain valuable skills that help guide them through their academic education, as well as prepare them for future job markets upon graduation. Co-op is optional and supplementary to academic requirements of the degree. Students who wish to be considered for co-op will be selected on the basis of academic performance and suitability for the work environment. Total enrolment is subject to the current state of the market as well as the resources available to support coaching and job development. Acceptance into the program does not guarantee students employment in each work term.

Biology Co-op offers a wide variety of placement opportunities for students, ranging from positions relating to cell biology and genetics to ecology and environmental biology. Your work experience takes the form of four four-month work placements at a variety of organizations in Canada and potentially internationally. You must complete all four work terms in order to receive a Co-op designation on your transcript. Your first work term placement starts in the Winter of third year. To apply to the Biology Co-op program, you must apply for third-year standing or currently be third-year standing in the Biology undergraduate program. The above schedules are highly recommended by the Co-op Program in order for students to complete their program within the shortest time frame.
