Cognitive science is a diverse field that is unified and motivated by a single basic inquiry: What is cognition? UC San Diego has been at the forefront of this exciting field and the Department of Cognitive Science was the first of its kind in the world. It is part of an exceptional scientific community and remains a dominant influence in the field it helped create. In addition to preparing undergraduates for careers in a variety of sciences, the major also provides an excellent background for many professional fields, including medicine, clinical psychology, and information technology. The concerns of cognitive science fall into three broad categories: the brain—the neurological anatomy and processes underlying cognitive phenomena; behavior—the cognitive activity of individuals and their interaction with each other and their sociocultural environment, including the use of language, information, and media; and computation—the capacity of mathematical and computer systems to model cognitive and neural phenomena and represent information, and the role of computers as cognitive tools.

How does the human brain accept religious beliefs, even in the face of contradictory evidence? We will examine how cognitive, developmental, and cultural factors work together to cause humans to believe in the supernatural. Topics covered include: the history of AI and Cognitive Science; basic mechanics of LLMs; the emerging field of "LLM-ology"; philosophy of mind; how LLMs can help inform research on human cognition; the role of sensorimotor grounding in cognition and the development of multimodal LLMs; and the impacts of LLMs on human culture and society more broadly. Students learn skills and are assigned responsibilities based on the project to which they are assigned. Students also participate in a journal club and prepare brief end-of-quarter presentations and reports.

This course examines the interrelationships of cognition and technology from the perspective of cognitive science. This course is an introduction to the neuroscience behind the principles of economic decision-making. Ethics in research. Selected readings from the late s to the present are covered. Explores current theoretical frameworks of high-level human cognition that emphasize how we interact with the material, social, and cultural world. Students learn conceptual and practical aspects of creating high-quality, interactive information displays to support a variety of cognitive tasks and then apply them to real-world data.

Examines the contrasts and parallels between primates and cetaceans in sensorimotor constraints, neuroanatomy, field behavior, and cognition in the lab, with a focus on the demands of competition and cooperation that helped shape the evolution of social cognition. Cross-listed with CSE Social Cognition: A Developmental and Evolutionary Perspective 4 This course presents the building blocks of social cognition from a developmental and evolutionary perspective and focuses on how and when children develop these abilities and how humans compare to other species such as great apes, birds, and dogs. This course is an introduction to the neuroscience behind the principles of economic decision-making. Information Visualization 4 This seminar surveys current research in information visualization with the goal of preparing students to do original research. Data Science in Practice 4 Data science is multidisciplinary, covering computer science, statistics, cognitive science and psychology, data visualization, artificial intelligence and machine learning, among others. We will examine the developmental, neuroimaging, electrophysiological, as well as clinical evidence, for and against this hypothesis. May be repeated when topics vary.
