I have students from two large regions: region 12 solo and ensemble takes place on the same day, typically in February; region 29 takes place on different days depending on the school, but mostly in March. The state solo and ensemble contest takes place in Austin on Memorial Day weekend. You must perform a piece that is on the prescribed music list. There are a lot of them! They range in difficulty from Fiocco Allegro or the Bach d minor Allemande my go-to choices for less advanced students who want to play a class one solo all the way up to Brahms Concerto. Two levels. If you perform a class one solo from memory and receive a one at your local contest, you qualify to go to the state contest. Ensembles need not be performed by memory. Scoring at State is quite a bit more stringent than at the local level. You do not need to perform the same piece at State that you did at the local contest, but it still needs to be a class one piece performed by memory.
