In the drama adaptation he is played by Gong Jun. Wen Kexing is a young man in his late twenties who is also the master of Ghost Valley, a society of outcasts and criminals. He has a ward, Gu Xiang. His tragic backstory involving parental death, cannibalism, child abuse, and possible sexual abuse is revealed very late in the novel and is told in pieces throughout the drama. He meets Zhou Zishu by chance after he leaves the valley on a secret revenge quest and follows Zhou Zishu for the rest of the story, flirting outrageously. Fans have written meta and fanfic about the differences in his personality between the novel and the drama.

The identity reveal is mutual and equal — perhaps it should even be called identity confirmation instead, since both had long suspected who the other was. He even had gotten a bit of supportive affirmation from Gu Xiang! Not that she knew what that was about, but still. But where Wen Kexing had worries, Zhou Zishu had always accepted him; after all, he is well-aware of what kind of person he himself is, so how could he judge someone else? And once Wen Kexing learns about the nails, he drags the issue of their identities out into the open himself: knowing how little Zishu has left, is there time for anything but honesty? The identity reveal in the show is done very differently — or rather, I should say reveal s , since the scenes are separated by over ten episodes. Then, for most of this arc, it is shown that Zhou Zishu has figured things out, but is not pushing Wen Kexing, waiting for him to make the choice to tell him on his own. What Wen Kexing needs is not time, nor vague assurances that he can tell Zishu anything — what he needs is the previous situation addressed. And this is my second problem with this arc — it is never addressed. And the thing is, while the show finally passes the identity reveal hurdle here… there is another consequence of never addressing that inciting episode. It is not an exaggeration to say that that first rejection left a lasting scar — which contributed to the whole… mess of the finale. And this is my third, and last, problem with an entirety of this arc: was it even… necessary? Was all that better in any way than the balanced, mutual reveal in the novel? What exactly did it add?
