Early on in the show, we started thinking about how and where Axe grew up and realized that he was this metal head. It was part of his identity that he liked to showcase. Episode four of the series, he takes his friends to see Metallica. We needed him to show his Metallica allegiance, especially with all the rebellious stuff that Metallica still stood for and the way in which Metallica always seems to rise again, like Bobby Axelrod.

All of which is entertaining even before you consider some of the uncanny parallels to the real corporate world. One unexpected appeal is that Billions has made my job easier to explain. Well, it has brought performance psychology into the mainstream and showing that performance psychology is very distinct from clinical psychology. You might say a clinical psychologist helps equip us with the skills to be mentally healthy while a performance psychologist helps us with the skills to mentally thrive. I want to be very clear that the techniques of performance psychology are not for everyone. For those suffering depression, anxiety or any other very common mental illness and about half of the population experience mental ill health in their lifetime , the first step is to get mentally healthy. Trying to skip steps and do affirmations or implement high-level positive psychology techniques can end up doing more harm than good. When our mental ducks are in a row however, performance psychology can take you to the next level. Just as we do in the real-world, by applying principles of human behaviour to help Axe and his employees manage their stress, improve self-talk and teach the resilience and apply mental skills to successfully navigate high stakes, high pressure environments to achieve their potential. In short, Wendy has used performance psychology to facilitate peak performance in the workplace. In the THINK chapter of my book, MatchFit , I explore some of the techniques we use in greater depth, but my work with Greg not his real name provides some insight into performance psychology in action:.

Unless someone knows you, which I have. Damian Lewis and Maggie Siff bring to life one of the most intriguing and complex relationships we have ever seen on TV. It is sincere and it is strategic. It is friendly and it is flirty. It is personal and it is professional. It is delicate.

We were really lucky that the director of the final episode is Neil Burger. Neil directed the pilot of Billions, the second episode of Billions , and several others.

As the folk troubadour once said, the times they are certainly changing. After an indeterminate amount of time spent working from home, all the Ax Cap employees are now back in the office wearing masks and social distancing. There are more changes on the horizon, too, as Axe completely overhauls Axe Cap's structure so he can get his bank off the ground. That means some of the employees won't make it through the transition, and some will have new titles.

One of Billions ' greatest strengths is how beautifully it sets up all its pieces before knocking them down.
Wendy heads out of the world of Axelrods and Princes to do some good for the world by running her tele-health therapy business.
