Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is heavy on worldly themes such as sacrifice, redemption, the horrors of war, genocide, the price of ambition and more. But all these dark themes are balanced with stories of hope, courage and love, and the heroes of Fullmetal Alchemist prove that humanity has a light side to match the dark. Just look at Edward Elric and Winry Rockbell. Despite everything Ed has been through , he will never give up hope of a better world. His motivations were always centered around his family, including his younger brother Alphonse and their mother. However, Ed would eventually realize that his heart belonged to his childhood friend, Winry -- and these romantic feelings were made clear more than once. Early in the series, during Ed's hunt for the Philosopher's Stone, he got himself injured and ended up in the hospital.

Winry has pale skin, big dark-blue eyes and long light blonde hair that reaches her hips with long bangs falling on the front and a fringe directed to the left. Usually her hair is tied in a long ponytail. Her hair, while it is straight, is often portrayed as wavy in some ilustration of the manga and the anime. After the Promised Day , Winry is seen with her hair loose and using a pink jacket with a black shirt and blue jeans. In the anime adaptation, Winry becomes physically older, having a more adult face and appearance, while in the manga she still looks the same until the final chapter. Ed and Winry have known each other since they were little and the time she spent growing up with Ed and his younger brother, Al had gotten her to view the Elric brothers as family. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a renowned shonen fantasy series that is beloved not only for its exciting alchemy-based action scenes, but also for its strong human element. The Elric brothers are desperate to atone for attempting human transmutation, and their childhood friend Winry Rockbell supports them all the way. Winry isn't an alchemist; instead, she is dedicated to machines and automail, and as a favor, she will fix and upgrade Ed's automail anytime he asks for it, free of charge. Winry was a fairly typical "girl next door" at first, but she and Ed soon fell in love, and indeed, they married later on. And more than once, Winry proved that Ed is the only one for her. Edward Elric made Amestris history when he was accepted as a state alchemist at age 12 , and it helped that he had seen the Truth and didn't even need transmutation circles to perform alchemy. Winry was impressed, but she didn't like the other implications of this. For one thing, Ed would leave her far behind for work. Ed grew up in Resembool, a rural town, with Winry and Al.

No viewer who watches through the whole of either of the Fullmetal Alchemist adaptations is able to walk away without thinking that Ed and Winry make a pretty good couple. Even though romance is far from the focal point of a show that focuses heavily on war, conspiracies, and whether science or religion can really complete a person, the importance of close relationships is still emphasized throughout the series. Despite the fact that their relationship is quite heart-warming to watch develop, it doesn't mean that everything about their partnership exactly fits. Much like real people, Ed and Winry are both incredibly strong personalities who are hard-set on decisions once they're made.
